Do I choose an iPhone, a Blackberry or is Android the way to go?
Posted under: Crew & Staff by Willem
The iPhone 4, Samsung (Google) Nexus S 9800 and BlackBerry Torch have been available for some time now, so you can expect prices of these smartphones to be stabilized by now. What are the benefits of each phone? The phones will be judged on screen resolution, processor speed, storage, camera and battery.
Apple iPhone 4
* TIP: iPhone 4 16GB
Display: 960 x 640 pixels - 3.5 "
Processor: 1 GHz. ARM Cortex-A8 - 512MB RAM
Storage capacity: 16GB or 32GB internal Flash
Camera: 5 megapixel, LED flash - Video recording H.264 720p
Battery: Rechargeable lithium-ion battery (not replaceable)
The iPhone is perhaps the figurehead of a generation of people, who can't imagine a life without social media, digital gadgets and mobile communications at any time. Reasons why the iPhone could be an excellent choice are;
- Unmatched display
- The ability to use the Appstore
- Possibility of 720p HD video recording
- The intuitive iPhone interface
- The enormous range of iPhone accessories
- Great mp3 functionality
Samsung (Google) Nexus S
* TIP: Google Nexus S
Display: 480 x 800 pixels - 4 "
Processor: 1 GHz. ARM Cortex-A8 - 512MB RAM
Storage Capacity: 16GB flash memory iNAND
Camera: 5 megapixel, LED flash - Video recording 720 x 480 pixels H.264, H.263 MPEG4
Battery: Li-Ion 1500 mAh (replaceable)
One of the most impressive features of the Nexus S is the battery. This lasts longer than any other 4-inch Android smartphone on the market. A full charge of the 1500 mAh battery gives the Nexus S energy for about two days, even with regular web browsing and a constant data connection. This is similar to the iPhone, but the Nexus S has a removable battery. This is a strong selling point for the Nexus S. Other reasons to choose this phone are:
- First phone using Android 2.3 software Gingerbread
- Curved screen for optimum viewing angle
- Very large display
- All software is fully Google with hardware made by Samsung
- Android is currently the most popular platform on the mobile phone market
Blackberry 9800 Torch
* TIP: Blackberry Torch 9800
Display: 360 x 480 pixels - 3.2 "
Processor: 624 MHz processor - 512MB RAM
Storage capacity: 4GB to 32GB with microSD or internal
Camera: 5 megapixel, LED flash - Video recording 640 x 480 pixels H.264, H.263 MPEG4
Battery: Li-Ion 1300 mAh (replaceable)
At first glance one might say that the Blackberry 9800 Torch has specifications inferior to the iPhone and Nexus S. However, it would not be smart to make a decision purely based on these numbers. There are many possible reasons that the Blackberry to be a better option, depending on your personal needs;
- Both touch screen and full keyboard QWERTYY
- Push-mail service (see immediately when an email arrives)
- Ping (Blackberry Messenger)
- MicroSD slot that makes storage expandable to 32GB
- Aimed at the business user
It quickly becomes clear, there is no such thing as 'the best' smartphone. It depends on the needs of the user which phone is best. When chosing a smartphone, ask yourself what you expect to use most of the phone. Want lots of trendy apps and use the phone a lot for pictures and filming, go with the iPhone. Is internetbrowsing a big issue for you, probably the Nexus S is a good choice then. Want Push Email and a QWERTY keyboard, in that case the Blackberry is probably your best smartphone.
